OjiFS Environmental Product Declarations Published

OjiFS product catalog

We are excited to announce that OjiFS has published three Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for pulps manufactured at our Tasman Mill.

  • K25® Fibre Cement Pulp (FCP) for Construction Products
  • K25® Fibre Cement Pulp (FCP)
  • Paper-grade Unbleached Kraft Pulp (UKP)

These are the first set of EPDs for pulp published in Australasia, and the second for pulp products published anywhere in the world.

Our EPDs are published on the Australasian and International EPD system databases as well as on our website.

We are extremely proud to be powering the circular bioeconomy and leading the charge towards increased transparency in sustainability data.

Q&A's

What is an EPD?

EPD stands for “Environmental Product Declaration”. As the name implies, an EPD is for a specific product, not for a manufacturing site. EPDs complement our existing reporting on direct emissions (scope 1 emissions) and purchased energy (scope 2 emissions) by adding the emissions upstream and downstream in our value chain (scope 3 emissions).

An EPD presents the results of an environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in a standardised format. It is independently verified and published with a third-party EPD programme.

EPDs provide environmental data that allows our customers to make their own choices about what matters most to them. They are like nutrition labels for food but instead of carbohydrates and fat, they present carbon footprint, water footprint, waste and other environmental emissions.

OjiFS’ EPDs are jointly published by EPD Australasia – the local EPD operator in New Zealand and Australia – and the International EPD System in Sweden. This sets them up to have the best possible international acceptance for our global customer base. The EPD for K25® FCP for Construction Products also includes the Eco Platform logo, allowing it to be recognised across Europe.

What is an LCA?

LCA stands for “Life Cycle Assessment”. It is a method used to assess the environmental performance of a product over its full life cycle, from “cradle to grave” or “cradle to cradle”. LCA considers all environmental emissions over the life cycle of the product, including the growth of trees in the forest, chemical manufacturing, product manufacturing, packaging, transport to customer and the product’s end-of-life.

What do the EPDs cover?

The EPDs cover the main pulp products manufactured at our Tasman Mill. They do not cover pulp, paper or corrugated board products produced at other sites. We are working on a series of LCA tools to provide LCA data for these products.

Why have we published two separate EPDs for K25?

An EPD is verified according to a set of rules known as a Product Category Rules (PCR). There are separate EPDs for pulp products and construction products. As fibre cement pulp is used in fibre cement board, we have produced two EPDs for K25: one following the pulp PCR and one following the construction PCR.
