OjiFS Forests FSC® Certified and Spring Planting Collaboration
OjiFS Forests now FSC® Certified
We are proud to announce all 25 OjiFS-owned forests, totalling 7,565 hectares and located in the Central North Island Fibre Basket (CNIFB) of New Zealand, are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) certified.
We are committed to adopting FSC® principles relevant to responsible forest management, ensuring we contribute to positive environmental, social, and economic outcomes.
Amenity Planting
As part of that commitment and to improve biodiversity in our forests, we have decided to plant specific areas with mixed New Zealand native shrubs and trees.
Recently, our Fibre Procurement team planted 450 mixed native species around the entrance of our new Te Pae o Ngamoto (Tar Hill) Forest, which is owned and managed by OjiFS and located approximately 6 kms south of our Kinleith Mill.
Biodegradable Plant Guards
To help protect the plants from frost, animal browsing and wind, the team used FSC® certified (FSC-C016539) biodegradable plant guards, that replace plastic guard products.
Biodegradable plant guards are custom-made and manufactured by OjiFS Packaging New Zealand, using coated solid fibre material to enhance the guard’s performance in the field, whilst enabling natural break down and decomposability.
Plant guards are increasing in popularity and our fibre procurement team enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate with our talented packaging teams and put their award-winning plant guards to the test.
Small areas of natives will continue to be established around OjiFS’ forests in the future and if you’re in the area, expect to see more OjiFS plant guards popping up.
