SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY IN NEW ZEALAND

Plantation forestry in New Zealand is controlled by national legislation. Collectively, these laws protect indigenous forests and require plantation foresters to manage biosecurity, health and safety, historical and cultural values, as well as environmental risk.

Wood Sourcing

SOURCING VIRGIN WOOD FIBRE

Virgin wood for our pulp mills, comes mostly from the 'Central North Island Fibre Basket' (CNIFB) of New Zealand, where our pulp mills are conveniently located. The CNIFB consists of 650,000 hectares of sustainably managed plantation forests of radiata pine.

The long, high-density fibres in radiata pine are sought after for their strength qualities in a variety of end uses.

Our operations promote the efficient and complete use of renewable forestry resources by using pulp logs, small utility logs and slabwood for our pulp and paper, and bark for bio-energy.

SOURCING RECOVERED FIBRE

The production of recycled container board from recovered fibre is an integral function of our business, as it completes circular bioeconomy.

Our Fullcircle service collects wastepaper from a range of customers throughout New Zealand, including trim and cuttings from our own packaging operations. The majority of recovered fibre is used in our paper mills to produce containerboard, which is then converted into packaging products. Very little fibre goes to waste throughout the conversion process.
